CRV Science Launches LowKey Games, a Free, Ad-Free Browser Gaming Hub Bringing Evolutionary Biology and Chess to Any Device
With 543 species across 18 broad groups of the Tree of Life, interactive cladograms, a rotating Daily Challenge and cross-game leaderboards, LowKey Games turns real phylogenetic research into quick, playable puzzles.
CORVALLIS, Ore., October 18, 2026 · CRV Science (Corvallis Science) today announced the launch of LowKey Games (games.crvscience.com), a free, ad-free web gaming hub that makes evolutionary biology, taxonomy and chess accessible on any phone, tablet or computer. Built around the tagline "Play. Learn. Evolve.", the platform pairs fast, arcade-style play with rigorous phylogenetic science, so students, educators, nature lovers and puzzle fans can explore the Tree of Life with no downloads, paywalls or advertising.
At launch, LowKey Games offers a suite of connected biology games and study tools built on a curated dataset of 543 species across 18 broad groups. Every organism carries its real scientific name (Genus species), its place in a real evolutionary lineage, and anatomical clues grounded in current research. Species are shown with openly licensed, credited photographs.
"Most educational games either sacrifice scientific accuracy for simplicity or bury the fun under textbook memorization," said Bryan White, biologist and founder of CRV Science. "With LowKey Games, we wanted to build a space where cladistic reasoning (understanding how life is actually connected through shared traits and common ancestry) feels as immediate and rewarding as a daily word puzzle or a quick round of chess. Whether you have thirty seconds for a sprint or an hour to explore the cladograms, the whole platform is free and open to everyone."
The games
- 🌳 PhyloClade: Tree of Life. The flagship game: see an organism and its anatomical clue, then pick its closest evolutionary relative. Choose Normal, 60-second Timed or Learning mode and one broad group or all 18, or tap Quick Play for an instant 30-second, 1-minute or untimed round. A Display Phylogeny button shows the group's family tree mid-game.
- ⚡ CladeSpeed: Kingdom Rush. A 30-second arcade sprint sorting organisms into vertebrates and invertebrates, with keyboard controls and screen-reader support.
- ⚔️ PhyloVersus: Triplet Duel. Ten rounds of three organisms: two share a more recent common ancestor, and players must spot the evolutionary outgroup.
- 🪞 Look-Alikes. Convergent evolution as a game: a shark beside a dolphin, a clubmoss beside a moss. Find the one that only looks related.
- 🌍 Where in the World? Tap where each species is native on a world map, and learn which famous pests people carried around the globe.
- 🧪 FoldLab: Protein Folding. Fold a chain of beads so the oily ones hide from water, the way real proteins fold, with a fact card after every level. Each level's best fold is proven by exhaustive computer search.
- ♟️ Chess Trainer: Best Move. Pick the best of three candidate moves in real positions from opening to endgame; every move is rated Perfect, Good or Blunder by the Stockfish chess engine.
Daily play, profiles and badges
- Daily Challenge: one biology game featured each day, the same puzzle for every player, plus a daily streak that counts any game played.
- Field Guide: every species a player classifies correctly is logged in a personal compendium with its traits, evolutionary relationships and full taxonomy.
- Tree of Life cladograms: branching diagrams for every broad group, labelling each game answer with the scientific clade it stands for and showing where research is still unsettled.
- Profiles without accounts: each player gets a Player ID and a secret Recovery Code, with no name or email required. Scores, the Field Guide and 34 badges sync across devices, and every game has its own leaderboard plus a combined All Games board.
